#1 Accomac Fisherman
The Lower Eastern Shore, June 1608
"The first people we saw were two grim and stout savages upon Cape Charles, with long poles like javelins, headed with bone."
- Captain John Smith, 1612

The fish that they were easily spearing were supposedly cod, which today rarely visit the Chesapeake. It is more likely that they were catching kingfish or sea trout. In addition to spearing fish, the Accomac also used many different kinds of weirs - fences built across a stream or river - to catch fish.
