#44 Historic St Mary's City
St. Marys River, 1608

John Smith observed the mouth of the St. Mary’s River in 1608 because it is indicated on his map, but he probably did not explore the river. Fur trader Henry Fleet visited the Yaocomaco village there in the late 1620s and Maryland’s English colonists acquired this settlement in 1634. The village was only 7 miles from the confluence of the Potomac River and Chesapeake Bay.
