#49 The Hamlet of Yaocomaco, Historic St. Mary’s City
St. Marys River, 1608

In the early 17th century, Yaocomaco Indians lived along the St. Mary’s River. This was an agricultural hamlet with the houses scattered among the fields, typical of many of the Algonquian Indian settlements John Smith encountered along Chesapeake Bay. Archaeology reveals where these houses stood and confirms that this was a scattered agrarian settlement.
