#3 Accomac Settlement

At Accomac, Smith and his fellows met with a warm reception. There being no qualified interpreters, Smith used the words he had picked up as a captive of Powhatan the previous winter. Smith asked the chief to tell him what to expect as he journeyed northward and the chief replied “good harbors for canoes.”

Since chiefly hospitality among the native people involved feasting, orations, and honoring dances, Smith and his men would have spent the night.
