#25 Baltimore's Inner Harbor
Baltimore/Patapsco River, Summer 1608
"We passed many shallow creeks, but the first we found navigable for a ship, we called Patapsco…"
- Captain John Smith, 1612

Smith recognized the value of what became Baltimore Harbor as a safe and deep anchorage. He thoroughly explored the inner harbor area and was surprised to find its shores covered with solid forest, with no Chesapeake Indian inhabitants. Due to adverse winds, the barge and its crew was forced to spend several days in this area.
