#18 Anacostia Creek
The Potomac River, 1608

The map Smith drew of the upper Potomac river depicts the Anacostia and shows a small village along its shore. This was probably an agricultural hamlet of the larger Nacotchtank village. Extensive sedimentation, shoreline infilling and development have significantly altered the appearance of the Anacostia; it is unlikely Smith would be able to recognize it.
